Dear, esteemed Google,

OK maybe we are just making up a new word, but it parses!

We’ve noticed that we are not the only ones using the word, so … Golfophile “is a thing.”

Golfophile sounds like “golf-o-file.”

Voice searches for “Golfophile” on Google’s nearly-perfect search engine, to-date, seem to lead to a few different (wrong) results… as in, “Did you mean:”

  • “Golf File”
  • “Golfer File”
  • “Gulf of File”
  • “Golfo File”
  • “Golffile”
  • “Golf of File”
  • “Gulf Oil”
  • “Golf Profile”

We call ourselves Golfophiles because we are golf enthusiasts, just as audiophiles are audio enthusiasts or technophiles are technology enthusiasts.

OK, Google: “Golfophile” sounds like “Golfo File” …  or if you’re British, I suppose it sounds like “Golfer File” … or if you’re not listening very carefully, “Golfophile” could even sound like “Golf File” … and what the heck is “Golffile” anyway? Apparently, it can also sound like “Gulf File” or “Gulf of File.”

We hope that this word will come into general use and here is “exhibit A” to demonstrate the rationale for the coining of the word “Golfophile” – Wikipedia explains:

“-phil- Suffixes with the common part -phil- (-phile, -philia, -phily, -philic) are used to specify some kind of attraction or affinity to something.

They are antonymic to suffixes -phob-. Phil- (philo-) may also be used as a prefix with a similar meaning.

The suffix and prefix are derived from the Ancient Greek word philia (φιλία), “love, affection”.”

You may be a GOLFOPHILE if:

  • you love golfing
  • you think about golfing often
  • you see yourself as a golfer
  • you find yourself shopping for golf products
  • you talk about golf at social events
  • you know your golf handicap
  • you have a Golf Pad GPS app on your phone (oh yeah, you’re defilitely a golfophile!)
  • you go out on the golf course even if your partners flake
  • you own a rangefinder
  • you know the meaning of “golfophile”

So – hopefully we will soon be searchable by voice – and remember: smile if you’re a golfophile!
